Inscribed on the four corners of Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium are the following words, written by former UNL professor of philosophy Hartley Burr Alexander :

  • Southeast: “In Commendation of the men of Nebraska who served and fell in the Nations Wars.”
  • Southwest: “Not the victory but the action; Not the goal but the game; In the deed the glory.”
  • Northwest: “Courage; Generosity; Fairness; Honor; In these are the true awards of manly sport.”
  • Northeast: “Their Lives they held their countrys trust; They kept its faith; They died its heroes.”

Memorial Stadium Ticket Policy
Gates to Memorial Stadium will open 90 minutes before kickoff. Fans are encouraged to enter the stadium at the gate printed on their ticket; however, fans can enter gates 3 through 24 to access East, North and West Stadium via the concourse. There are no steps at Gate 16, and Gates 15, 16 and 24 are handicap accessible.

Gates are numbered in order clockwise around the stadium from 1 to 24, beginning in the southwest corner. To find the best stadium entrance to reach your seats, a complete list of gates is available on the seating chart link (Memorial Stadium Seating Chart ).

Gate 1 is not a public entrance, but is a pass gate for Nebraska and opponent player guests. Purchased tickets that are to be received at the public will-call can be collected, with proper identification, at the ticket office across the street from Memorial Stadium. Media will-call is located at the northwest corner of Memorial Stadium.

Stadium seating is number from left to right, and tickets designate section, row and seat number. When standing at field level facing the seats, seat 1 will be on the left. Patrons should retain a ticket stub any time they are away from their seating area.

Nebraska Athletic Ticket Office Guidelines for Memorial Stadium

  • All fans (regardless of age) must have a ticket for admission to Memorial Stadium.
  • A ticket is a revocable license for the ticket holder to gain admission to an event sponsored by Nebraska Athletics. The University of Nebraska reserves the right, without the refund of any portion of the ticket purchase price, to refuse admission to or eject any patron from the event venue at any time, for any reason permitted by law.
  • Incidents involving lost, stolen or destroyed tickets will be addressed with the season ticket holder of record only at the Ticket Office. Photo identification is required .
  • Dates and times on game tickets are subject to change.
  • University policies and state and federal laws will be in effect.
  • The violation of any rules may prevent admission to a Nebraska Athletic event, removal from an event, and jeopardize the violator’s admission into subsequent Nebraska Athletic events, including the forfeiture of season tickets and the ability to purchase single-game tickets.
  • Beginning with the 2008 season, student seating is general admission. If you purchase a validated student ticket, please go to the assigned area of the stadium (East or South) and sit in any available student section (East – 9, 10, 11 or South – 12, 13 or upper 14). People holding East Stadium validated student tickets will be required to present a wristband along with the validated ticket to gain admittance. Wristbands may be obtained at the distribution tent on the day of the game. Validated student ticket holders may enter through Gates 21, 22, and 23 on the East or 3 and 24 on the South.

Prohibited Items at Memorial Stadium
The University of Nebraska reserves the right to examine the contents of any container brought into the stadium. To protect the safety of our fans, players, officials and staff, the following items are prohibited:

  • Alcoholic beverages or controlled substances
  • Backpacks, large bags and coolers
  • Noise makers
  • Glass bottles and cans
  • Video cameras
  • Banners/flags on poles
  • Open umbrellas
  • Limited use of cameras and portable radios is permitted. Game action may not be filmed. Consideration of other spectators is expected.
  • With the passage of the concealed weapons law in the state of Nebraska, fans are reminded that concealed weapons are not allowed on the UNL campus and are prohibited at all collegiate sporting events.

Permissible Items
Fans can access the express entry lanes when entering the stadium with a jacket and tickets. Small-sized purses and camera bags are also allowed in the stadium, but must be screened in the security check points.

Memorial Stadium Re-Entry
Pass-out checks or stamps are available from gate attendants. Both ticket stub and pass-out check are required for re-admission.

Will Call and Ticket Validation
The Nebraska Athletic Ticket Office will open four hours before kickoff for will-call, ticket problems and student-ticket validation. The Ticket Office is located on the ground level of the northeast corner of the Stadium Drive Parking Garage (Lot 1). Questions regarding game tickets may be answered by calling the Ticket Office at (402) 472-3111 or 1-800-8-BIGRED.

Event Staff
Nebraska event staff members are available to assist the public throughout the athletic complex on game day with a purpose of providing the most enjoyable experience possible for all fans. Event staff are trained to assist all fans in a variety of ways. Please do not hesitate to ask your nearest event staff for help no matter how simple the question.

Memorial Stadium Improvements

A chronological listing of expansion and improvement

from the original 31,000-seat structure built in 1923:

  • 1946 – Completed Schulte Field House (construction began in 1941, but was interrupted by World War II).
  • 1964 – South end zone section installed, making the stadium a horseshoe, raising capacity to 48,000
  • 1 965 – Center portion of north end zone section added, raising capacity to more than 53,000.
  • 1966 – Both wings of the north end zone added, raising capacity to more than 65,000 and making into a bowl.
  • 1967 – New press box and guest section added.
  • 1970 – Installed new AstroTurf playing surface.
  • 1972 – South end zone extended, 9,400 seats added, raising capacity to 73,650.
  • 1973 – Athletic office building completed with dressing and training facilities for varsity football.
  • 1977 – Replaced AstroTurf and added new scoreboard over the North Stadium.
  • 1981 – New West Stadium weight room and new visitor’s locker room in the North Field House.
  • 1982 – Expanded North Field House indoor practice area.
  • 1984 – Artificial All-Pro Turf installed.
  • 1985 – Completed Hewit Center (dining area/study hall) in West Stadium.
  • 1989 – Expansion of strength complex and Hewit Center.
  • 1992 – New Astroturf-8 artificial turf installed.
  • 1994 – Installed Mitsubishi Instant Replay boards and completion of Michael Grace production studio ( ) in West Stadium. Remodeled Section 14 for disabled, reduced seating to 72,700.
  • 1995 – South Stadium training room remodeled and new interview room and player lounge completed.
  • 1997 – Groundbreaking began on a $36-million stadium improvement project to take place over a two-year period. East concourse was renovated with new restrooms and concessions and stadium lights were installed on the east side.1998 – Stadium was rededicated on April 24, and the football field was named in honor of Hall of Fame Coach , who retired as the winningest active coach in college football with a 255-49-3 career record. Lights installed on the west side.
  • 1999 – Stadium Improvement project completed with 42 suites, club seating, stadium view lounge, new press box and renovated concourses, concessions and restrooms. Seating raised to 74,056. FieldTurf installed in August, making NU the first Division-I program to use the synthetic surface.
  • 2000 – Increased club seating reduces capacity to 73,918.
  • 2001 – Expanded team meeting room/players’ lounge in South Stadium. Expanded and Hewit Center in West Stadium.
  • 2004 – Additional lockers added to South locker room to house entire football squad during construction of Tom and Nancy Osborne Athletic Complex on north end of stadium. North Field House torn down in summer 2004, and work on new project begins.
  • 2005 – Replaced FieldTurf, changing subsurface of field.
  • 2006 – Completion of the Osborne Athletic Complex and on North end of . Addition of Skyline Suites and seating for disabled in North Stadium and addition of giant screen in North end zone. entrance of moves from South end zone to North end zone. ’s football offices, locker room and administrative offices move from South to North Stadium.
